The Sheldon Plaza is a vital new public space for The Sheldon Concert Hall & Art Galleries, connecting visitors along Washington Avenue to The Sheldon’s front door while attracting pedestrians from the Public Media Commons.

The Plaza brings together a new pedestrian walkway with an adjoining series of terraced spaces, offering a gradient of experience for the outdoor display of art, staging of small performances or educational gatherings.

A dramatic new vertical garden will attract pedestrians while providing an inviting atmosphere. A rich variety of climbing plants will ascend the cables and seasonally choreograph a veil of green with shocks of color.

The cable array, suspended from the existing facade, creates an irregular pattern in contradistinction to the building beyond. Modulation in the array promotes the propagation of vines, adding density of vegetation and curbing growth where desired while maintaining a unified visual presence.

In the evening, the walkway will come to life as a vibrant nightscape. Integrated illumination traces pathway contours and garden terraces while LEDs within the vertical garden create softly animated ‘digital fireflies'.

The project will also contribute to the momentum of other public initiatives in the Grand Center Arts District, providing adjoining public space to the future Artwalk and connecting the Public Media Commons to the corridor of arts organizations along Washington Avenue.

Project in collaboration with Benjamin Gilmartin, Powers Bowersox Associates, DLANDstudio, Michael Ludvik, & Randy Burkett.
