⧵ House Min
⧵ New Orleans, LA ⧵ 2006

House Min was prompted by Hurricane Katrina, by 196 blighted and adjudicated properties in the neighborhoods of Tremé/Lafitte and Tulane/Gravier, and by New Orlean’s proposed post-Katrina policy that promoted aggregating lots in favor of larger homes over urban density.

The design is not for a single house but for a core that can accommodate any of the selected properties algorithmically. The core adapts to each lot by extending its interior spaces up to the buildable perimeter. In series, outdoor spaces are formed in tandem that transgress the bounds of property. Beyond a certain threshold of lot size and proportion, the configuration can provide an accessory unit to provide rental income as either a residential or small commercial space, helping to build flexibility and wealth for the community though density rather than through the accumulation of material goods, i.e. larger homes.

Created by Cobalt Partner Andrew Colopy while a research fellow with the Columbia University Spatial Information Design Lab.
