⧵ Luminary
⧵ St. Louis, MO ⧵ 2014 ⧵ Built

The Luminary is a non-profit artist-in-residency program that curates experimental art exhibitions and musical performances. In need of a permanent home, the organization purchased and joined two existing buildings on Cherokee Street south of downtown St. Louis. Undertaking much of the renovation work themselves and with volunteers, Cobalt Office created an economical phased design approach. The design first unifies the patchwork facade. Painted dark, the interior is then opened up to the street with expansive glazing and a bright, contrasting white ribbon of gallery wall that lifts at the rear of the space to create a proscenium for a small stage. This lifted gallery wall, also a stair and seating, provides access to offices above while defining a space for the library, concessions and conference room, all kept to the rear. A new opening and stair are carved into the floor to permit access and daylight to the artist-in-resident studios below, and the independent photography studio forms an edge along the eastern side of the galleries with an oblique storefront to lend a separate street presence.
