This sculptural sign provides a new identifying marker for the Sheldon Arts Foundation along the Grand Center Artwalk. Standing over 10 feet, the sign was created from 510 stacked plates of 1/4” stainless steel, each fabricated directly from a digital model by waterjet cutting, then tumbled to soften sharp edges. These plates come together to give the appearance of stacked, volumetric, 3-sided letters. Negative spaces are textured with an offset sawtooth pattern developed to increase contrast, especially when uplit at night. The entire structure is tensioned through the central rod, compressing the stacked plates to 15,000 lb to prevent lateral movement.
