Skew proposes a new typology for accessory dwelling designed around three principal criteria: ecological responsiveness, distinctive character and robust adaptability. The hub and spoke organization centralize work and activity while extending space for dining, sleep and respite into the surrounding landscape. These lightly cantilevered spaces permit the absolute minimum of impact on the ground and an inherent adaptability to local topography. The attenuated massing nestles among the trees, orienting each interior toward a desired view while glancing away from those of adjacent residents; a strategy to promote seclusion while increasing density. Finally, Skew belies its massing, appearing as a set of familiar, if oblique, icons—houses, not simply lifted, but lifting from the ground.
