⧵ Hycohen Residency⧵ Houston, TX ⧵ 2024 ⧵ Completed

	Units: 210 (one and two bedroom)Density: 25 units/acreBuilding type: three-story gardenStaus: built, 2024

Hycohen is a 210-unit development on the south side of Houston, Texas. Organized within a splayed crosshatch of drives are seven residential buildings, a loose-fitting grid that sandwich a meandering sequence of shared amenities: community building to central pond to dog park and run. In each, one- and two-bedroom units combine to form three legible volumes, one sheared at the main entry, and all tied together from one end by a playful roofscape. Enmeshed within a rich landscape of native trees and grasses, the otherwise identical buildings are occasionally rotated within the grid yet painted on each side relative to orientation—warm in tone if viewing north, cool if south—lending variety and interest while instilling a sense of orientation and place.

⧵ Clock Tower⧵ Houston, TX ⧵ 2027 ⧵ In Construction

	Units: 218 units

Density: 161 units/acre

Building type: Podium

Status: In Construction, 2027 completion

Clock Tower Residences is a 285,000-square-foot multifamily housing project designed by Cobalt Office, currently under construction in Houston’s Heights neighborhood. Sited adjacent to the historic Heights Clock Tower—a former textile mill from 1894 listed on the National Register of Historic Places—the project serves as a contemporary complement to this important landmark that today houses a mix of restaurants and office space, adding residences to form a more complete urban ensemble.

The development comprises 218 residential apartments embracing a pair of distinctive communal courtyards. The first is intimate and shaded, its north-facing orientation creating a cool, protected enclave that serves as an outdoor extension to the fitness and co-working spaces—ideal for yoga, small group activities, or quiet contemplation. The second is sun-drenched and expansive, centered around a pool and connected to the communal kitchen—designed for larger community gatherings while framing views of the neighboring Clock Tower that sweep from Downtown to Uptown. These two outdoor spaces are linked by a carefully curated sequence indoors—fitness and spa, co-working areas, a media room, a communal living room and kitchen—all featuring meticulously crafted interiors.

At the building’s quiet eastern edge, four apartments extend down to street level, offering lofted live-work units with direct sidewalk access and a pedestrian-scaled presence. On the opposite end, near the commercial corridor of Shepherd Drive, the main entry and leasing office anchor the building alongside a small café and cocktail bar all tucked among a composition of staggered, oversized masonry volumes.

The architectural language layers a masonry frame over a more delicate vocabulary of blush-toned vertical cladding. This dual expression organizes both space and material, articulating a refined palette of buff masonry detailing that speaks to the neighborhood’s industrial heritage.

⧵ Public Media Commons

⧵ St. Louis, MO ⧵ 2014

The Media Commons is a first-of-its-kind interactive media environment and public plaza in the Grand Center Arts District of St. Louis. Encompassing 13,000 sf between the studios of St. Louis Pubic Television (9 Network) and Radio (KWMU, within UMSL’s Media Center), the space bridges these institutions and fosters creative exchange with a new way to engage the public: a site-specific “broadcast channel” that is an unprecedented synthesis of public media and public space.

The plaza is defined by two white, perforated metal facades. Animated by programmable LED uplighting, these surfaces incorporate large-format projection, LED screen and audioscape. A new window into the TV Studio provides a glimpse behind the scenes, and “virtual windows” create direct interaction via LCD touch screens or through mobile devices utilizing the QR code patterned facade. Visitors to the space not only engage the content within but create and contribute their own.

The broad central gathering space was designed for big events: speeches, concerts, cinema screenings, town halls, and benefits. To either side are the Broadcast Platform, an elevated café terrace or stage, and the Grove, a shady hangout and place to relax or spectate. Here, the landscape exhibits rich seasonal variation, reflecting the ever-changing news and media cycles as well as Missouri’s native prairie landscape. Whether just passing by or attending an event, visitors not only become an integral part of the local public media broadcast they experience the center of St. Louis’s public media, music, art and culture.

⧵ Over⧵ Los Angelels, CA ⧵ 2025 ⧵ Competition Entry

	Units: 35 units

Density: 188 units/acre

Status: Competition Entry, 2025 (Small Lots Big Impacts Competition)

Confronting the spatial, regulatory, and economic realities of multifamily development, both in Los Angeles and nationwide, this proposal retools the conventional “5-over-2” logic into a smarter, efficient but more spatially generous “6-over-1.” Working within the height limit, the building uses a single level of Type IA construction of pozzolanic concrete at grade, topped by six stories (technically five plus a mezzanine) of Type IIB panelized cold-formed and recycled steel framing to expedite construction.

Above, units are organized as two-story stacked flats split into public and private floors alternating vertically and connected by a simple, prefabbed spiral stair. Exterior walkways at alternating floors enable single-loaded access, generous daylighting and cross-ventilation while remaining efficient. The vertical stacking within units further enhances cross-ventilation, privacy, and provides spatial richness within a constrained footprint.

At the street, a muted but articulate elevation of corrugated fiber-reinforced concrete panels expresses the rhythmic stacking and shifting of unit volumes. Simple fiber cement siding wraps the remaining facades—economical, fire-resistant, and low-maintenance. The southern walkways and stairs, doubling as awnings for shade, reveal the project’s circulation spine and extends an invitation to the community through oversized landings designed for pause and conversation. Stairs, guardrails and windows provide a playful expression against an otherwise muted color pallet.

The uppermost units incorporate mezzanines and outdoor living rooms, enabling light, air, and a sense of spatial generosity often missing in efficient, mid-rise housing. Ground-level units are single-story and designed with accessibility in mind. Unique alternates of each unit type address the angled street façade. Together, the combination offers a diversity of dwellings.

This is not just an exercise in code compliance—it’s a rethinking of domestic life in a city that needs to be more vertical by necessity. In a place historically shaped by horizontal expansion and the single-family ideal, this project proposes a future where density is both livable and transformative.

⧵ Indigo Commons⧵ Richmond, TX ⧵ 2028

	Units: 66 Density: 80 units/acreBuilding type: three-story point-access blocksStaus: in design, 2028 (anticipated completion)

This 66-unit housing project is organized as two three-story, street-facing point blocks that reinterpret the walk-up apartment within a mixed-scale neighborhood. Ground-floor units open directly to the street, while upper apartments are accessed from a single shared stair at the rear, allowing all dwellings to receive daylight from two sides and benefit from cross-ventilation. Drawing on the familiar forms of the townhouse and duplex, the massing expresses a hybrid domestic type, with shared walk-up entries marked by a playful log column and a palette of patterned brickwork. Situated within a larger community of homes, shops, and walkable green spaces, the project introduces a compact medium-density housing model that bridges individual address and collective living.

⧵ Tumble

⧵ New York City, NY ⧵ 2016

As finalists for the 2016 MoMA / PS1 Young Architects Program competition, Cobalt proposed “Tumble,” a set of six objects that would help to bridge institutions and foster a dialogue between cities and the rural environments on which they depend. The competition asks entrants to design and build an exhibition that serves also as the setting for the PS1 “Warm-Up” concert series that occurs each summer in the museum’s Courtyard in Queens, NY. Thinking beyond that scale, “Tumble” imagined an exhibition without end, an extended life for a more extensive effect.

Tumble begins as exhibition and becomes a lasting creative platform for artists to explore the ecological dialogue between the contemporary city and the non-urban environment. Six small buildings are first configured in the PS1 courtyard, and later are used as artists’ studios by residency programs throughout the U.S. Standing upright, they cast long shadows and are stabilized by water containers creating a cool place to sit and learn about their future locations where they will be tipped on their sides—tumbled—in order to become studios for the production of ecologically themed work that will return to the city in the form to be exhibited. Through strategies of figuration and configuration, Tumble facilitates new forms of collectivity and a lasting discourse on the city’s dependence on outside resources. In the courtyard, small partitioned spaces engender an intimate network of exchange in lieu of the singular spectacle of the crowd. Dispersed as studios, the structures inject a typically introspective residency experience with a larger collective interest. This is made legible by an architectural identity that, in turn, lends visibility to a collaborative effort among arts institutions across the country.

Created with an expanded Cobalt team, including Kerry Joyce, Anastasia Yee, Corey Phelps, Yao Xia, Yu Xin, Rebecca Erde, Nathan Keibler, Tony Yang, Jonathan Pan, Lara Hansmann, Hannah Wang, Andrew Bertics, and Ethan Chan.
